Pictured above: Winners of a 5 day holiday at Hotel Milano Helvetia, Riccione, – Mark Lovatt (bottom left) and Sarah Harrison (top right – flanked by runner-up Alice Larkin)

Buxton CC’s Mountain Time Trial ‘enjoyed’ Peak District Spring weather on Good Friday, with a tough headwind on the most exposed upper section of the course. The race again hosted Round 2 of CTT’s Classic Series, with the Start, Finish and HQ in Longnor.

A superb field of 94 solo riders and a tandem, including reigning and former national time trial champions in Ireland and the UK – Kelly Murphy and Hayley Simmonds, of Doltcini O’Shea Womens UCI Continental Team, and Tokyo Paralympics double gold medallist Ben Watson, as well as past winners and national champions, brought shine to overcast and showery skies.

Ride of the day was done by junior Patrick Casey (Team Grenke Auto Eder) who broke his own course record of two years ago, to record a blazing 55-59 for 2 laps; the fastest two lap time on the day by any rider.

In categories for time trial bikes: Hayley Simmonds was fastest female but was pushed hard by Kelly Murphy, recording 1-02-04 and 1-03-19, respectively. In the event for under 40s, open category, Alex Hodgkinson (Ilkeston Cycle Club) rode the three laps in 1-43-19 (noting that all other riders did two laps). In the paracyclists, Ben Watson (ADDForm Vive Le Velo) won with 1-03-09 (actual) and 46-51 (factored). Dominic Righini-Brand (Spalding CC) was top of the open veteran’s category, in 1-04-18.

As in recent years, the vast majority of the field were on road bikes: Sophie Heighton (Ferryhill Whs) won the junior female category, in 1-28-23, whilst Fraser Cummings (Matlock CC) was quickest open junior, in 1-08-00. In the under 40s, open category, former national hill climb champion Adam Kenway (Team HUUB) came out on top, in 58-40. Bethany Brooksbank (Trek Sheffield) won the female under 40 category, with 1-10-05. In the veterans categories, female and open, Sarah Harrison (Trek Sheffield) and Mark Lovatt (Congleton MyWindSock) triumphed in 1-18-19 and 1-00-54, respectively, each winning a five day stay at Hotel Milano Helvetia, Riccione.

Braving the conditions, and the course, local riders Jon & Liz Batt (Buxton CC) powered their tandem up and down dale, in 1-18-50.

Full results: CTT Classic Series Round 2 RESULT SheetV1-final

In addition to CTT’s prizes, Buxton CC provided £750 in prizes across all categories of rider, plus special on-the-day prizes provided by Sett Valley Cycles.

The event was again sponsored by Hotel Milano Helvetia, Riccione in Italy (www.hotelmilano.net), one of the area’s famous “Bike Hotels”, offering a 10% reduction on the cost of their stay (excluding extras like bike hire and bar bills, of course) to ALL ENTRANTS to the event. In addition, the hotel offered prizes of 2 five day stays at the hotel on their “Plus” package for cyclists, one for the fastest open veteran on a road bike and one for the fastest female veteran on a road bike: Mark Lovatt and Sarah Harrison.

The event took place with the huge support of CTT’s Stewart Smith (National Secretary) and Sue Bowler (Director), with St Bartholomew’s primary school very kindly allowing use of their premises as the HQ.

A big thank you to the members and friends of Buxton CC, without which the event could not take place:

There are five separate events:

Open under 40, and Open Espoirs, on time trial bikes only, who ride 3 laps (33 miles)

Tandem, 2 laps (22 miles)

The events are again kindly sponsored by Hotel Milano Helvetia, Riccione in Italy (www.hotelmilano.net), one of the area’s famous “Bike Hotels”. The hotel offers prizes of 2 five day stays on their “Plus” package for cyclists, and in a change for 2024 these prizes are offered to the fastest open veteran on a road bike, and to the fastest female veteran on a road bike. During their stay the package gives our winners bed, breakfast, evening meal and post-ride afternoon buffet along with the assistance of a guide to show them the best local routes (with the hotel’s other guests of course). The prizes don’t include air fares but many UK airports have budget routes to destinations in north eastern Italy which allow easy transfers to the hotel by bus, train or taxi. Bike hire is available at the hotel.

The Hotel Milano Helvetia, in addition, offers a 10% reduction on the cost of their stay (excluding extras like bike hire and bar bills, of course) to ALL ENTRANTS!

Long-standing sponsor of the event, Sam Clark at Sett Valley Cycles, also kindly sponsors the Mountain Time Trial in 2024, as in many previous years.

The race takes place with the support of CTT, with St Bartholomew’s primary school kindly allowing use of their premises as the HQ.

A big thank you to the members and friends of Buxton CC, without which the race could not take place.

Buxton CC’s Mountain Time Trial was again bathed in sunshine on Good Friday, and once more hosting Round 2 of the Merlin Cycles Classic Series, with the Start, Finish and HQ in Longnor.

A stellar field of 111 solo riders and a tandem, including national time trial champions in the UK and Ireland, and Olympic and World champion paracyclists, as well as past winners, brought yet more shine to the event.

In the men’s event, John Archibald (HUUB WattShop) broke his 2019 course record by 33 seconds, winning in an astounding time of 1-16-36 for the 3 laps each of 11 miles; an average speed of almost 26 mph! Kelly Murphy (AWOL O’Shea Worx) was well ahead of the rest of the field in the women’s event, with 1-05-39 for 2 laps. In the paracyclists, Fin Graham and Ben Watson (both Para-T) were separated by just 1 second on actual and factored time, with Fin pipping Ben, with 1-01-41 (actual) and 53-41 (factored). Richard Sharp (ADDFORM Vive le Velo) was top of the Veteran’s category, in 56-40. In the juniors/juveniles, Abbey Thompson (Stonham Barns Park SYRT) was a bit quicker with 1-22-04 than youngest finisher in the race, Joseph Throp (Matlock CC), aged just 12, who rode 1-23-01. And for what may well be the the first time, we had a tandem compete too: paracyclist world time trial champions Jenny Holl and Sophie Unwin (both Stirling Bike Club), recording 1-06-03.

Two-thirds of the field were on road bikes, showing how popular this category has become. James McKay (Team Sheffield) was fastest overall, with 54-05; quickest woman was Lucy Rogers (Congleton CC – MyWindsock) in 1-12-56; Karl Norris (360VRT) was fastest Vet, with 59-20; quickest male and female juniors were Jack Sutton (Stonham Barns Park SYRT) and Sophie Heighton (Ferryhill Whs) in 1-05-11 and 1-20-56, respectively.

Full results: CTT Classic Series Round 2 Result Sheet.

With a field of 111 solo riders and a tandem, competition will be intense. HUUB WattShop bring a strong team, comprising course record holder John Archibald and teammates Will & James Lowden. They won’t have it all their own way though, as male winners from the last two years, Andy Nichols (Team Lifting Gear Products) and David Fellows (Solihull CC), also ride. The women’s field is headed by Kelly Murphy, AWOL O’Shea Worx, triple national Irish time trial champion and team & individual pursuit specialist. Ten paracyclists will compete on factored time, whilst 8 juveniles and juniors will take on the testing course. The bulk of the field compete on road bikes, with names including multiple Tour of the Peak winner Mark Lovatt (Congleton CC – MyWindsock) and former national hill climb champion Adam Kenway (Team Brother UK). From Buxton CC – Sett Valley Cycles; Tracy Gregory, Liz Batt, Will Mallard, Josh Thorpe and Chris Baines are riding. In what is probably a first for the event, Stirling Bike Club’s Jenny Holl pilots a tandem stoked by Sophie Unwin. All entrants to the events receive a 10% discount on their stay.

Tough weather conditions made for hard racing. There was a brute of a headwind on the most exposed section of the course along Morridge Top, then a troublesome crosswind on the main descent towards Longnor. Thankfully, riders were helped by a tailwind up the big climb towards Flash Bar. It rained throughout.

In the senior men’s event there were just three starters from 13 entrants, such were the conditions. The vets and women were made of sterner stuff, with the majority taking the start, and no non-finishers. Thijs Geurts (Macclesfield Wheelers) was the quickest veteran.

Thank you to everyone who entered. Next year the event is Round 2 of CTT’s Classic Series and we are back to our usual Good Friday slot, with the Start, Finish and HQ in Longnor.

Thank you to the members and friends of Buxton CC:

Start timekeeper and assistant: Judith Soden & Nick Sharpe

Finish timekeeper and assistant: Tony Millington & Carl Braithwaite

The Buxton CC Mountain TT has again been sponsored by Hotel Milano Helvetia, Riccione in Italy (www.hotelmilano.net), one of the area’s famous “Bike Hotels”. The hotel is offering prizes of 2 five day stays at the hotel on their “Plus” package for cyclists, one for the winner of the Men’s/Espoirs’ in the 3-lap event and one for the winner of Women in the 2-lap event. During their stay, the package will give our winners bed, breakfast, evening meal and post-ride afternoon buffet along with the assistance of a guide to show them the best local routes (with the hotel’s other guests of course). The prizes don’t include air fares but many UK airports have budget routes to destinations in north eastern Italy which allow easy transfers to the hotel by bus, train or taxi. Bike hire is available at the hotel.

The Hotel Milano Helvetia will, in addition, be offering a 10% reduction on the cost of their stay (excluding extras like bike hire and bar bills, of course) to ALL ENTRANTS to the event!
